Woodkirk Wolves 3-2 Leeds City

A day when we ended up with probably our 10th choice keeper in goal for the second half.

Onto the game itself, we started pretty well and were the better side for most of the half. Unfortunately for us, a ricochet in one of the few attacks from the away side ended up in the back of the net.

We changed the formation with 10 to go in the first half to give Christy more support. It paid instant dividends with us camped inside their third, unfortunately the ball wouldn't go in.

A simple message at half time, up the intensity and better decision making in final third.

A great response in the first 5 with Whelan being fouled in the box. He stepped up and finished with aplomb.

That's when the drama started, our keeper got injured, which meant the gaffer had to don the gloves and make his debut for the season.

Once we restarted, Christy got a goal his second half performance deserved. Whelan then extended our lead with a quiet brilliant free kick from 30 yards out. We created more and missed even more with every one getting in on the act. With a few minutes to go Leeds City scored a consolation goal which gave the scoreline a much closer look.

That's six out of six from us and finally this young side is showing the consistency we've asked for.

MOM - Ty Akram, he put on a goalkeeping clinic in the second half. Punching and catching with real authority and starting many an attack. Some called it a Gigi Buffon - esque performance but he's too modest to even have his name mentioned in the same breath as the Italian legend.

MOM is tongue in cheek . It was Tom Whelan.
Match Day: Saturday 26th April

We got the three points today, far from our best performance this season. Thankfully a strong start to the second half put the game to bed.

Christy with a cracker from the edge of the box to give us the lead. Fish then on the receiving end of a questionable penalty shout. Which led to the equaliser. O'Neall restored parity and it stayed that way until half time.

First 15 minutes of second half we were excellent and scored 3 quickfire goals through Whelan, Mark and Jacob. We fell asleep for the last 10 minutes and allowed Littletown to make them look closer than in reality it was.

We move onto the last two games with a clear target in sight.

MOM - Mark, yet again the little man put on a great show and was the standout performer for us.

           Match Day: Wednesday 23rd April

Can we play midweek fixtures away in Huddersfield every week?

After beating champions elect Berry Brow last week the challenge was set to beat second in table Collegians. And boy did the lads respond.

To make things even harder we played with 9 men for 30 minutes, as players tried to rush across to the other side of the country to make kick off. The number improved to 10 after 30 minutes and then on 40 minutes we got to the luxury of a complete set with the added bonus of a couple of subs.

Onto the game itself, with 9 bodies we conceded a deflected effort from the edge of the box after the ref refused to blow for a couple of blatant pushes. When we got to 10 we equalised through our top scorer, Whelan.

We saw out the rest of the half and got in level, which allowed us to make the adjustments needed to come away with a positive result.

We were on the wrong end of another poor decision from the referee with the lad stood on the goal line for a pretty obvious offside. We dusted ourselves off and Tim having finally found the pitch and making his debut for the firsts equalised with a smart finish.

Just as we felt we could kick on the ref threw another clanger, the ball having hit the skipper in the stomach, the ref blew for a penalty. Thankfully justice was served when G making his debut pulled off a cracking save.

With 15 to go Sam drove through and with crowd screaming for him to shoot he showed maturity beyond his years to square it to the old head in the team Karim to tap on at the back post.

Daniel could have wrapped things up with 5 to go, but instead wrapped up the miss of the season with a complete air shot from 6 yards and a gaping goal.

We then had to see out a phenomenal 7 minutes of injury time that the ref found.

To a man, the lads put in a hell of a shift and represented the club with great heart and commitment.

MOM - There was a number of contenders but we're going to land on the first joint one of the season. Mark who never stopped working in the middle of the park and winning challenges against players twice his size. And Harry Bennett who is now getting back to his best, up against one of the best wingers I've seen at this level, he dealt with him with real authority and was a rock throughout.

Farsley Celtic B 3-2 Woodkirk Wolves

We created enough chances to win three matches, unfortunately a mixture of poor finishing and inspired goalkeeping by the Farsley shot stopper meant we left Bradford empty handed.

Farsley had most of the ball in the first half but Logan was largely untroubled in our goal. The home side took the lead from a corner where we failed to clear the ball and it was lashed home from close range. At the other end the keeper made a phenomenal save from Christy's sharp turn and shot.

The start of the second half we started like a house and fire, unfortunately for us the ball kept finding a way not to go into the back of the net. It did however go into the back of ours twice in a short space of time against the run of play.

We dusted ourselves of and responded with real intensity. We scored two through Whelan and Sam and missed numerous others and the keeper made some great saves.

We left scratching our head at how we go home with nothing.

We've got a couple of weeks off now before we go into the last part of the season. Plenty of games to go and to finish strongly.

MOM - Sam McBride, didn't think he put a foot wrong, dominated at the back and started numerous attacks. Got himself a deserved goal too.

Wolves Weekend Wrap-Up: Champions, Comebacks and Character Across the Club

It was a weekend full of drama, pride, and no shortage of passion across the Woodkirk Wolves club as teams from our youngest players to our senior sides put in impressive performances on and off the pitch. From silverware being lifted to grit shown in adversity, this was a weekend to remember for the pack.

U15 Girls Crowned Division 3 Champions

The headlines belong to our U15 Girls who clinched the Division 3 title in style with a dominant 5-0 win over Norristhorpe. In what was arguably their most complete performance of the season, the girls delivered a ruthless display from back to front. Abbie led the line with a superb hat-trick, while Evie A and Scarlett added two brilliantly worked goals.

Defensively, the team was solid once again, with Megan delivering what can only be described as a Rolls Royce performance in central defence, earning her the Girl of the Game award. A fantastic achievement with a game to spare, and one that reflects the hard work and development of every player in the squad.

Reserves Show Heart in Narrow Defeat

Elsewhere, the Reserves faced an uphill battle from the start, taking the field with just nine players against league leaders Sowerby Bridge. Despite the numbers disadvantage, the lads showed immense commitment and even took a surprise 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Daniel and a thunderous free kick by Swifty.

Unfortunately, fatigue and a late red card proved costly, and Sowerby found four goals in the final ten minutes to turn the game around. The standout moment came from Kene, who ran to the station to catch a train mid-game and arrived 28 minutes in to support his team. It was a result that didn’t reflect the performance, but the pride in this group could not be stronger.

First Team Fall Short Despite Bright Start

The First Team shared a similar story in their 4-2 loss to South Leeds. Starting brightly and taking an early lead through a Jonny header, the game quickly turned into a frustrating tale of missed chances and costly errors.

Fish unfortunately levelled the scores with an audacious own goal, and South Leeds took control in the second half. Despite a late goal from Cole and promising play from Jonny and Fin, the result slipped away. With nine games left, there’s still time for the team to find consistency and end the season strongly.

U17 Blacks Dig Deep for Mother’s Day Victory

At Woodkirk Academy, the U17 Blacks ground out a gritty 2-1 win over Honley in difficult conditions. A strong crosswind disrupted both teams’ rhythm, but Woodkirk found their spark in the second half.

After going one down early, the Wolves fought back and produced a moment of magic from Harry S, who struck from 30 yards with a rocket that flew over the keeper into the net. A fantastic strike that sealed a hard-fought win and capped off a great performance in tough circumstances.

U13 Blacks Secure Late Win in Thriller

The U13 Blacks produced one of the weekend’s most exciting matches, coming from behind to beat Wortley Colts 3-2 away from home. Max opened the scoring after great link-up play from Riley and Joe, but Wortley struck back and took the lead in the second half.

Max equalised through sheer determination, chasing down a long ball and sliding it past the keeper. With only minutes remaining, Riley stepped up to take a free kick from distance. The wind helped it dip in front of the keeper, and the ball found its way into the bottom corner for a deserved winner. MOM honours were shared between Max, Riley, and Tyler for their all-round contributions.

U10 Oranges Dominate Across Two Matches

The Under 10 Oranges faced Wrenthorpe in their penultimate league fixture and turned in two excellent performances, winning overall 8-3.

           Game 1

was a tight 1-0 win, with Gray scoring and Koby impressing as a lone defender and earning MOTM for his calmness and control.

           Game 2

was a more open affair, with Woodkirk running out 7-3 winners. Sam stole the show with a hat-trick of goals and assists, while Harry was instrumental in midfield and named MOTM. Jack was unlucky not to score what would have been the free kick of the season, hitting the crossbar from 20 yards.

U9 Oranges Impress in the Wind

The U9 Oranges gave a strong account of themselves against Altofts in windy conditions. The boys battled hard throughout the end-to-end contest. Freddie, who celebrated his birthday, was named Parents' Player of the Match for some brave goalkeeping. Coach’s award went to Riley, who showed great resilience to return to the game after an early knock and support his team throughout.

           U7s Show Progress Against Walton

The U7s showed just how far they’ve come in recent weeks with a much-improved performance against Walton. Their passing and movement were standout features of the game, and the improvement since their previous meeting was clear for all to see.

Freddie was the standout performer, scoring early and also putting in an excellent shift in goal with smart saves and composed distribution. The signs are promising for this young side who continue to develop with each game.

           A Weekend to Remember

From title celebrations to resilient battles and promising youth performances, this weekend captured everything that makes Woodkirk Wolves a club to be proud of. Every team played their part, every player gave their all, and the bond throughout the club remains as strong as ever.

Well done to all players, coaches, parents, and supporters. The Pack continues to grow.

           Littletown 1 - 3 Woodkirk Wolves

It was almost another game where we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. But thanks to a stirring second half performance we won comfortably in the end.

On a tough pitch to play, we started well and created a number of openings but poor execution meant we didn't get the opening goal. The closest we got was when Thorpy smashed the crossbar. When Littletown scored from their first meaningful attack, there was the feeling of 'oh, not again'.

We regrouped at half time with a few tweaks and the lads responded brilliantly.

Most of the second half was played in Littletown's half, with the home side preferring the more direct approach.

We got back in the game, when Fin was pulled down in the area and Whelan made no mistake. We took the lead shortly after when a lovely flowing move released Fin Thorpy on the halfway line and he drove through to finish with aplomb.

We got the decisive third late on, when Raph who made an excellent impact on the game, was at the back post for a smart finish from an excellent cross from Thorpy.

Attention now moves to next week where we will be looking to continue our recent good form.

           MOM - Fin Thorpy.

Started at right back due to a few missing but quickly moved to his more customary attacking right side position. Scored a goal, assisted one, hit the woodwork a couple of times and was a constant menace. Special mention to young Raph who made an excellent impact when he came on.
Medics Res 1 - 6 Woodkirk Wolves

After last week's shower the lads were asked for a reaction and boy did they respond.

From 3s and 4s out of 10 last week, today we had 7s and 8s across the board.

We started like a house on fire and got a goal early on through Fin. We doubled our lead on the 15 minute mark when Mark got on the scoresheet. Sam scored a great free kick to make it three and Thorpy smashed home just on the stroke of half time.

We scored four and created a boat load more.

A challenge was set to the lads to keep a clean sheet. That lasted five minutes when the home side scored from a corner.

Our response was pretty good and further goals from Fin and a penalty from Whelan put the gloss on the scoreline that our performance deserved.

We can finally say we are at the half way stage of the season, IN MARCH.

MOM - There were a few that it could have gone to but Mark gets it for his brilliantly energetic and composed midfield performance, and a goal to boot.

Woodkirk Valley Reserves emerged victorious with a scoreline of 3-2.

The game saw an intense battle with Woodkirk Valley Reserves initially taking the early lead but falling behind before half time. Woodkirk showed resilience and determination as they managed to turn the game around with two late goals, including a crucial strike in injury time. Despite facing a deficit of 2-1, Woodkirk displayed a fighting team spirit and strong teamwork, ultimately securing a hard-fought 3-2 win over Idle.

Coaching staff, substitutes and players ran to late goal scorer Daniel LLugna in mass celebrations. Massive 3points to help in the fight for survival relegation. 2 wins on the bounce pull us away from the bottom two with 6 games to go.

Lepton Highlanders 0 - 2 Woodkirk Wolves Reserves

The first half saw Woodkirk dominate possession, creating several promising chances but failing to find the back of the net, with the scoreline remaining 0-0 at halftime. Their young squad displayed impressive composure and tactical awareness, effectively controlling the midfield and launching multiple attacks against a resolute Lepton defense.

As the second half commenced, Lepton Highlanders adopted a more physical approach, seeking to disrupt Woodkirk's rhythm and capitalise on any weaknesses.

However, Woodkirk's resilience shone through. The young players demonstrated remarkable character, standing firm against the pressure and maintaining their composure.

In the latter stages of the match, Woodkirk's persistence paid off. They found the breakthrough with two well-crafted goals, showcasing their attacking prowess and sealing a deserved victory. The final scoreline reflected their efforts and determination, leaving Woodkirk Valley with a hard-fought win.

It was Woodkirk's tactical discipline and resilience that ultimately led them to triumph in this exciting encounter.

Man of the Match: Alex Rose playing out of his preferred position had an outstanding performance and had key contributions to the team's success & Scott Morton who made three 1v1 saves, was in fine form to keep a clean sheet.

           Leeds City 2 - 0 Woodkirk Wolves

A great performance from the lads today and again the score line flattered the opposition.

For the first time in a while we've played a number of games on the bounce and we're getting good rhythm in our performances.

We started like a house on fire and Zak finished a great team move. The rest of the half we thought it would be fun to miss pretty easy chances.

The start of the second half was Newsome's best in the game. We got the second around 10 minutes in when the brilliant Whelan finished smartly from the edge of the box.

Christy scored a brilliant third after great build up through the thirds, he had the centre half in knots before drilling into the bottom corner.

Whelan got his second and our 4th from a corner. After missing an identical chance in the first half.

The ref then decided to double down on some head scratching decisions. Firstly a foul on Logan from the corner was not given and then the tackle of the season was adjudged to be a foul. The manager nearly got sent off for his reaction to the decision.

Christy went down the other end and hammered home our fifth with a few minutes to go to ensure we took home the three points.

MOM - Tom Whelan, a fantastic midfield performance and two goals to boot. Ran the show and gave a clinic out there.

           Newsome 2 - 5 Woodkirk Wolves

Morley Town Ladies were at home this week in the league. Since the Christmas break, the management team had been impressed by the performances and the commitment of the squad despite the results. The game against Sherburn was no different with Morley holding their own and playing some good football in the tricky, slippy conditions.

Morley just lacked that cutting edge going forward and had a couple of half chances. Danielle had a half chance with a 50/50 backpack that, unfortunately, for Morley, didn't fall to a Morley player. Sherburn looked dangerous going forward, but we're well marshalled by the back 4 of Morley with some excellent pressing and some good cover.

Midway through the first half, Sherburn were awarded a penalty for what some would say was a harsh decision and converted to make the score 0-1. In the second half the game was again evenly balanced a change of tactics pushing Millie further forward began to increase the chances for Morley with some good play in the midfield and with Em Walker pushed onto the wing Morley started to push Sherburn back and had some good opportunities to level the score.

At the back Ebs in goal make some critical saves with 2 1v1s to keep Morley in the game. Morley just couldn't convert. As games have gone throughout the season a drop in concentration and 1 mistake place Sherburn a clear chance which they converted 15 mins from time and despite Morley keeping going to the end we were unable to convert any of the chances. Final score Morley 0- 2 Sherburn White Rose.

Morley Town Ladies played Wyke Wanderers in the last 16 of the league cup.

With some good performances recently, the girls were looking to build on the positive performances in the new year. Morley are building with young players this season, With 5 players under the age of 18 today and the bulk of the team under 21 the club are building and giving young players opportunity.

The game started badly and Wyke were 2-0 up from the first 3 attacks. Morley had not got out of the dressing room. After 15mins and some rearranging Morley got to grips with the game and started to build pressure We were a lot better and Wyke scored another against the run of play to make it 3-0.

The team held up well to intimidating comments and challenges from the opposition. Our young players stood up to it and didn't take a backward step. This knocked Wyke and the players grew in confidence drawing a number of mistakes from Wyke gaining territory and possession and bringing Morley more confidence.

Morley scored from a corner to make it 3-1 at half time. Morley were playing a lot better as we have been in the last few games we were creating chances just not finishing or the final ball didn't find the spot. Morley picked up a second as Shep the skipper picked up the ball 30yds out drove inside and beat the keeper from 20 yards out to make it 3-2 and we were really in the game.

Both trams had chances with Wyke hitting the post and cross bar. We thought we had scored direct from a cross with 20 mins to go but it just landed on the roof of the net. Some good saves from Annie coming in from the U18s kept the game tight and a good 1v1 save at the feet of the on rushing striker was the pick out save of the game.

We had a really good chance to equalise with a good move and a cross across the 6 yard box that we couldn't get a touch on it. With 5 mins to go Morley changed to 3 at the back to push for an equaliser. Wyke scored a last minute goal from our goal kick to make it 4-2.

A lesson for the young team today on how not to start a game especially playing a very physical and aggressive opposition. These experiences can only help with there development, we go again next week and are impressed by the development we see in the group especially our U18s stepping up.

The scoreline flattered Farsley and in reality we should have won with plenty to spare. But football doesn't work like that.

Two penalties from Whelan and a smart finish from Christy from the edge of the box gave us a 3-2 lead at half time.

Fin scored the winner with 15 to go in his more advanced position to ensure we took home the three points.

We only have the league to focus on now and the challenge for the lads is to get some consistency and rhythm into our performances.

Man of the Match - Fin, we played him higher up the pitch and he was brilliant. A constant menace and worked his backside off. A goal to boot too.

           Woodkirk 1-2 Berry Brow

The scoreline doesn't tell the story of a cracking game between two very good sides.

Our pitches were waterlogged which meant it was going to be another postponement. We managed to source a 3G between us in Huddersfield. So, even though it was a home game we ended up playing on their doorstep to get the game played.

There wasn't much between either side throughout the 90 but the decisive moment came with a few minutes to go when the ref didn't blow for offside and the cruelest of blows meant we went home with zero points.

The first half was goalless but both keepers were tested and there was some excellent football on display.

At the start of the second half we had a chance which was excellently saved by the opposition keeper and then they scored at the other end when a mix up in midfield allowed them to play the ball through for a smart finish into the roof of the net.

We dusted ourselves down and went on the offensive and for the last 25 minutes we were in the ascendency. We got a deserved equaliser when young Sam, scored a worldie from 30 yards with 10 to go.

We kept all the attacking players on as the momentum had swung and felt the game was there for us to win. Unfortunately a long ball down the middle and an offside whistle that failed to materialise meant the lad went through and scored the winner.

We had a great chance with a minute to go after a cut back from Fisher, unfortunately we got in each others way.

The opposition manager came over to say how impressed he was with us. Unfortunately that doesn't get us any points.

When we start getting the rub of the green, we'll start climbing the table. Until then we don't deviate from our beliefs.

MOM - Sam/Whelan thought both of them were excellent at the back as a bit of a makeshift centre back pairing.

           We're in the Quarter-finals!

           Cowling 1-2 Woodkirk

After what feels like forever we finally got around to kicking a ball around a pitch for 90 minutes on a Saturday.

This game had been postponed for the last two Saturdays, like pretty much every other grassroots game in the country. But there is a rule that no knew about at Woodkirk, the game gets switched after two postponements, Cowling did and exercised that right. Just the two hour plus round trip for us.

Onto the game itself, young Raph got given a starting berth after impressing for the reserves in recent matches. He didn't disappoint and can be proud of his debut. We started the better and got into our passing groove pretty early on and dealt with Cowling's direct approach without too much trouble. We got the opening goal with an absolute worldie from Cal Thorpe. We progressed up the pitch with brilliant, crisp football and then Thorpy nailed one into the corner from the corner of the box. We missed chances to double the lead and the hope was it wouldn't come back to bite us in the backside as it has in the first part of the season.

We came in at half time a goal to the good and the message was to look for more goals and kill the game.

Cowling started the second half better and quicker with more intent, we had to withstand a lot of balls into and around the box but JP and Jonny dealt with it without too much trouble.

Cowling got their equaliser when a misplaced pass from us trying to play out from the back was cut out, it was moved to a player 20 yards out who drilled the ball home.

We dusted ourselves off and Tom Whelan got what turned out to be the winner by reading the flick on from Christy, and sliding it past the keeper. We then missed some good chances to put the game to bed. A Whelan cross, come shot hit the post and O'neall's effort was cleared of the line. Scott Morton had an effort saved by the keeper too.

At the other end we had to absorb a lot of pressure without Logan in goal having to make any noteworthy saves. Young Harry Bennett made a brilliant block inside the area.

We saw out the 10 minutes of injury time to progress in the cup.

Great performance from the lads and a real show of character to progress against direct, physical side.

MOM - Jonny Downey, majestic at the back and dealt with everything thrown at him.
